Due to the fact that my “mission tasmania” is definitely over with the end of february you probably won’t find any postings from me at this place any more. As I found a company for my diploma thesis at Bremen/Germany I’ll spend the next six months in the very north of Germany. Probably I will keep you up to date on my personal website or I will set up another blog or whatever – we’ll see.
Of course Jochen will continue posting ‘cause he finally made it to some more months downdownunder – lucky guy! ;-)
snowy weeks in Bremerhavenfiled under germany living by Florian

The winter has Germany unter control – a friend just told me he had to spend the night in his car due to lots of trucks that were blocking the frosted highway…
And yes, even in Bremerhaven we have some white powder. Not enough for a snowman but enough to feel like in winter. Greetz to Tassy by the way – I heard you enjoy the summer with temperatures around 30 degrees? ;-)
Hello World from Bremerhaven!filed under germany living by Florian
The last three weeks flew by – now I’m sitting at my desk at the AWI in Bremerhaven with a high speed internet connection and enjoy the Tassy pics from the last 4 months (of course only after work *gg).
What a great time! These four months were the best I’ve ever had – a compact adventure of incredible nature, great hospitality and just nice people.
Greetings to the Jane gang, the AAD crew and – of course – Mondo’s Pizza (-> Roberto) ;-) I just heard from the news that the new airbus A-380 will be used first by Singapore airlines next year – a perfect opportunity to visit Tassy again!
Till then I wish all the best to all of you out there...
...and all that I forgot, sorry for that – Take care!
Now one of the first items on my todo list is to find a haircutter to fight with the result of 4 1/2 months of wild growing hair…
Next plans then are finishing my practical internship, finding a company for my diploma thesis and start looking for a job for September ‘05 – oh my god, my studies are almost over ;-)
Stay tuned & cu, Flo
Pitstop Singaporefiled under germany tasmania by Jochen
You’ve questioned it, so here it is!
I’ve reached Singapore after an 11h flight from Frankfurt. In Frankfurt I also met Tobi my room mate from Bremerhaven. I think he allready reached Johannesburg.
That’s all what comes to my mind right now so I’ll prepare for my next 8 hour trip :)
Final Countdown!filed under germany tasmania by Jochen
The time has come! I’m leaving the german shores….
Bye Bye Germany… Hello Tasmania
Time to say goodbye!filed under germany living by Jochen
Everything is coming to an end! So I’ve reached the end of my time here in Bremerhaven. When I look back to this 3 months I have the feeling that there must be gap in the space ‘n time continuum. Where has this time gone?
One thing I found out in this period is, that Bremerhaven isn’t as worse as it’s reputation is, and in my humble opinion, everywhere you go is “night and light”.
But the most impressive thing here in northern germany were the people I’ve learned to know. They all where so kindly and so wonderful to me and gave me the feeling like being at home and I’m thankful for every minute I’ve spent with them.
“Hey you, girls and boys from the north. Thanks for everything! I love you and miss you all!
You know how you are!”
Farewell Party in Bremerhavenfiled under party germany by Jochen
Yeah, the final countdown starts. This was my last weekend in Bremerhaven before I start my trip to the other side of the world. Reason enough to party :) .
I wasn’t only my last weekend! Tobias my room mate and a REALLY good friend also leaves the northern regions of the world. It’s unbelievable! He’s going to be more in the south than I will be! He’s heading for the Antarctic and the island Signy .
We wanted to cheer one last time with all girls and boys who really meat something to us and where so kindly and wonderful and gave us the feeling of being at home here in Bremerhaven!
They suprised us one more time, when they even had farewell-presents. They created carepackets with insectspray and a hot-water bottle and many other funny stuff we would probably need for our trips.
We all had an awesome evening and was indeed a night to remember!
For me it was a real honour to spend this night with you guys!
Cheers
Cilly and Michael in Bremerhaven (2 weeks ago)filed under germany trips by Jochen
After a view week with no updates from my side I’m back, and many things happened since my last entry.
Cilly and Micheal visited me here in Bremerhaven.
The fellowship of the CN-WG was seperated from the beginning of the their journey. Jan canceled the trip at half past six in the morning, because he couldn’t organize the schedule for his thousand projects. Benny was ill. He had some problems with his stomach, but wasn’t there a party at the university the day before? ;)
So Michael and Cilly finaly made it to Bremerhaven by train. We only did 10% of the schedule I’ve made but we had a awesome weekend and of course, the nights were longer than the days!
We visited two pubs. The “Yesterday” and the “MuckFuk”, and had some Caipi’s. ... I haven’t :) , I was the taxidriver :(
But before we hit the streets, we hit the ice , and did a little cooldown before the hot night! For me allready the skating was hot! I weared my warm jacket.
Finally we found the “Bremerhaven Waldrast”. It’s called “Am Alten Kaiserhaven – the last pub before New York”. The portions are the same size like in Fuwa, but here you eat fish. It was really really tasty.

Earthquake in northern Germanyfiled under germany living by Jochen
Yes! It’s the truth! Yesterday at 9 AM it happend. I was sitting in front of my PC. Somehow I recognized little vibrations but I didn’t pay them much attention. But these vibrations got stronger and the lamp on my desk starts to shake. Then I looked over to Ronny who also recogniced it. It was an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 and it’s epicenter was 60km south-east of Bremerhaven. I can tell you, it’s a strange feeling when the ground starts to shake!
If you don’t believe me just read this article ! I’m sorry this article is only in german, but I think an earthquake with magnitude 4.5 in Germany isn’t that impressive for other countrys. But for Germany it is really impressive!
Thanks to Michael who found this english article .
Polarstern is back!filed under germany trips by Jochen
Yesterday was a very hard day. I had to get up at 03:30 AM, and I wouldn’t have made it, if Tanja didn’t wake me up, but in the end it was worth its price.
We went out to see Polarstern, the AWI scienceship, running back into the harbor and welcome the ship’s complement. It was an amazing thing for me, as one of the souther folks, to see these little hauler pulling this ship through the wategate and to the docks.
And after an hour or two standing around in the cold we even could get on board and had a guilded tour through the whole ship. Thanks to Uwe to let us in and to Rike for the guidance at these point!
Please take a look at the pictures I’ve made. Some of them might be a little bit blurry, but I had to take the pictures without using the flash and it was so f****** cold that my hands where shaking all the time. ;)
Btw. the ship above is the Polarstern too!
